Exploring Italian-Canadian Heritage Through Sound: The Release of Mandi

Toronto-raised, London-based musician David Zucchi has released his debut solo album, Mandi, a deeply personal exploration of family history and the Italian-Canadian immigrant experience. Released through the Toronto-based label people | places | records, this album reconstructs and reimagines audio recordings made by Zucchi’s father’s family in 1959—just eight years after emigrating from Italy to Canada.

These original reel-to-reel tapes, recorded to send back to loved ones in Italy, offered a sonic glimpse into their new life in Canada. The crackles, glitches, and natural deterioration of the reels over time serve as an integral part of the album’s musical fabric. Through elaborations and reconstructions of the spoken words, songs, and sounds captured on those tapes, Mandi becomes a haunting and evocative tribute to family, memory, and migration.

The album’s title, Mandi, is a Friulian farewell, attributed variously to “M’arcomandi” (“I recommend”), the Latin “Manus Dei” (“Hand of God”), or the Italian “Mani di Deo” (roughly, “May you stay in the hands of God”). Zucchi’s family hailed from Collalto di Tarcento in Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giulia region, and the recordings reflect the everyday joys, struggles, and resilience of this immigrant community in Toronto.

For Zucchi, this project is not just a musical endeavor but a deeply personal connection to his Italian heritage. By blending archival recordings with contemporary composition, Mandi bridges past and present, offering listeners a unique auditory experience that resonates with themes of displacement, nostalgia, and identity.

The album is now available for streaming and purchase on Bandcamp. Additionally, listeners can also explore the visual elements of the release by viewing the CD booklet below, which adds depth and texture to the rich Italian-Canadian history behind Mandi. The album art, created by Emma Werner, beautifully complements this musical narrative
